Kings Cross Road, 2 Feb 1950

Amazing photos from the State Library of NSW.  Two great views of the southern side of Kings Cross Road that was lost to the tunnel.

These photos were taken on 2 February 1950 by an unidentified photographer.

They look connected to the lamp changer photo posted earlier.  Is the black car parked in the foreground below the same car heading up the hill in the lamp changer photo?  But the lamp changer photo is not part of the set that includes these two on the SLNSW site.  More research to be done...

The photos seem to have been taken from a window of the building next to Kaindi Flats.  Judging by the architectural details visible in the photo, Kaindi Flats is the building still standing but now known as Francis Hall (16-20 Kings Cross Road). The building next door to that in this photo is called Kevern Court.  The building next door to Francis Hall (ie 22 Kings Cross Road) is still standing, but has "1918 Kew Lodge" built into the parapet at the top of the building.

Across the road, a man in a white shirt is visible on the porch of 21 Kings Cross Road.

These are the kind of photos I am hoping to find. There's so much focus on the buildings and the street, and so much detail.

Check out the full group of photographs at the link below. They are all taken in Kings Cross on 2 Feb 1950, but none have captions. There are some of Chips Rafferty (I think) and William Dobell (I think), a great crowd scene, and lots of interesting street portraits.

Both photos above are from the Mitchell Library, State Library of NSW:   https://collection.sl.nsw.gov.au/record/9qoalRZ1
